As any health-conscious Vancouverite who eats out regularly can tell you, we’re fairly spoiled when it comes to fresh, local, organic offerings in restaurants around town. But a few places are dedicated to providing us with healthful meals that don’t skimp on flavour. Here are a few.
Owned by a devout Buddhist, Dharma Kitchen brings a philosophy of good will and good karma to each of its vegan dishes. The menu is abundant with fresh, hearty salads, tempeh burgers, wholesome rice bowls and tofu entrees. Its location in Kitsilano aligns nicely with the neighbourhood’s hippy roots and healthy outlook. The small space is both vibrant and peaceful, its red walls a successful juxtaposition with the tranquil Buddhas, its world music soundtrack pleasantly bouncing off bamboo screens.
This somewhat radical, mission-based organization opened just as the raw-food trend was gaining a following. Starting as a take-out window on a slightly seedy stretch of Richards Street downtown, they’re now a full-fledged restaurant proving the appetite for raw, vegan, organic meals is insatiable in this town. Their creativity is impressive: lasagne made with zucchini noodles, sprouted buckwheat and sunflower seeds making a pizza crust, veggies and flax combine to make bread. And it’s all delicious.
With the closing of Bo-Kong — every vegetarian’s favourite Chinese restaurant — there was little option for those looking for something other than sweet and sour pork or ginger beef. Thankfully, this small cafe on a quiet block on Hornby has opened its doors. With a wide variety of vegetable and tofu dishes, as well as meat substitutes, you can get your Chinese food fix in a healthy way. They also have set menus for parties of four or more at excellent prices.
Very at home on the Drive, Eternal Abundance offers both a grocery store filled with organic foods and a cafe specializing in vegan dishes, many of which are raw and/or gluten free. They have a lovely selection of energizing juices, including wheatgrass and E3live (blue-green algae), as well as breakfast options and an impressive lunch menu with nods to Japanese, Lebanese, Mexican and Italian cuisines. Just being in the cafe will make you feel healthier, though we definitely recommend ordering.
While this beautiful restaurant near South Granville may ooze healthfulness, well-being and clean living, this is not to the detriment of profound taste and impressive portions. Delicious daily soups are fragrant with spice and homemade stock, beets stand in for bacon to chewy, successful effect and curries overflow with vegetables and rich gravy. Heirloom proves that you can do healthy (and vegetarian) in satisfying ways.
While most of the places on this list are vegetarian, meat-eating and being healthy are not mutually exclusive. Which is where Something Healthy comes in. This unassuming cafe by the International Village offers items like lean burgers, grilled chicken breast with roasted vegetables and salmon and brown rice or quinoa bowls. Pizzas come on a whole wheat crusts with skim cheese. Calorie counts are associated with each dish, so you can be informed about your food choices while thoroughly enjoying your meal.
You likely don’t associate healthy eating with a pie shop, and nor should you. But Aphrodite’s is much more than its (albeit delicious) pies. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this Kitsilano cafe serves comforting, home-style meals bursting with vegetables and served with fresh organic greens. Their multigrain bread is baked in house and can be substituted for a gluten-free choice. And once you’ve polished off that wholesome meal, go ahead and order that slice of pie — you’ve been good.
