5 tips to keep gaming devices in top shape

28 juillet 2015

By their very nature, gaming devices — both hand-held and console-based systems — are pretty tough. They are made to withstand constant handling and occasional rough treatment, but they all perform better with a little TLC.

5 tips to keep gaming devices in top shape

1. To clean screens

  • To clean the screens of any gaming with a built-in or touch screen, turn off the device, then rub it very gently with a soft, lint-free or microfibre cloth.
  • If necessary, the cloth can be slightly dampened with water, but do not use any household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, acetone or ammonia-based products.
  • Do not press hard.

2. When hand-held games get sticky

  • Turn off the power and wipe them with a dampened cloth.
  • If extra oomph is needed, spray a very small amount of kitchen cleaner onto the cloth, but do not let it become wet, or moisture will seep under the buttons and cause havoc.
  • Polish the exterior case with a microfibre cloth to remove any fingerprints.

3. To clean accessories

  • For gaming accessories such as joysticks, steering wheels, remote controllers and other hand-held devices, which can get sweaty, sticky and grimy, use a cotton swab or even the edge of a bit of card to lift dirt from crevices.
  • Then wipe the exterior with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with mild kitchen cleaner.

4. Wii fit

  • Nintendo's Wii fit equipment is designed to be used barefoot, so the Wii fit balance board should be cleaned frequently to keep it germ free.
  • Wipe the board with a soft cloth to remove any loose dirt and dust, then wipe over with a cloth dampened with a disinfectant mild kitchen cleaner and dry with paper towels.
  • Do not saturate the surface or leave it damp.
  • You can also invest in a silicone sleeve to cover the board, which can be removed and washed.

5. To clean gaming discs

  • Do not use any cleaning solution other than water.
  • Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water and, using straight — never circular — strokes, wipe from the centre outwards.
  • Gently dry the disc, using the same movement.
