When Sony Brar decided to strike out on his own in business, his family not only backed him up, they gave him exactly what he needed. “My uncle had previously suggested that I open a pizza restaurant and use his recipes, so I went for it,” Sony says.
Sony’s Californian uncle Bulwinder came up with the original sauce and dough recipes that have made Bulwinder’s Bakersfield business so successful.
“It’s got the franchises worried,” Sony says. “He truly has a great product. In fact, the only thing that stopped me from opening a pizza restaurant sooner was my lack of restaurant experience.” This soon changed when Sony decided to invest fully in the business.
“I went down to California for six months and learned the business as a full-time employee. From sauces to payroll, I learned it all.”
Slice Pizzeria is located in the fast-developing area of South East Edmonton. In 2014 alone, many businesses, houses and even a recreation centre have sprouted up in Slice Pizzeria’s neighbourhood. “We still get a lot of construction workers in for lunch,” says Sony. “And we cater to many of the businesses in the area.”
